La Deuxieme Ligne

( French / Louisiana Creole: " The Second Line")  /  pronounced; lah duh-ZYEM LEEN)

Latex, acrylic, and texture paste on canvas - 24 x 30 in.

In New Orleans, the Second Line takes to the street in celebration after the grief of a funeral procession and transforms it - through music, through color, through particularly New Orleans insistence that joy is not the opposite of sorrow but its fullest expression.  The brass band plays.  The umbrellas spin.  The crowd moves.  And if you are standing at the curb watching it come toward you, what you feel before you see it is the sound - and what you see before you understand it is the gold.

La Deuxieme Ligne is painted from the curb.  The viewer stands at the left of the open street, in the quiet third of the canvas that the procession has not yet reached.  The black matte ground is the asphalt beneath it all, flat and silent, the street that belongs to ordinary life until the Second Line claims it.  Above the street, a gold horizon burns - the sound and light of the procession moving ahead of the crowd itself, the way music fills a block before the musicians turn the corner.  And from the right, the procession arrives in full: purple, green, teal, blue, and gold layered and spinning and swirling over one another - the costumes, the umbrellas, the bodies in motion, the particular exuberant chaos of a tradition that transforms mourning into celebration without erasing either.

The white of the Saints, the gold and black of New Orleans - these are not incidental.  They are the architecture beneath the celebration, the city holding the event the way roots hold a tree.  This painting does not document the Second Line.  It holds the feeling of watching it come toward you and knowing that when it arrives, you will not be able to stand still.

Living with La Deuxieme Ligne

La Deuxieme Ligne brings the most joyful and culturally specific energy in the Roots series.  The gold surface catches light and shifts throughout the day - making the procession feel perpetually in motion regardless of the hour.  It belongs in spaces where energy is welcome: a dining room, an open living space, an entryway, a creative studio, or any room that needs the particular New Orleans reminder that celebration is not frivolous - it is survival.

It pairs naturally with warm neutrals, deep wood tones, and the terracotta and sienna palette that New Orleans architecture carries in its bones.  Against white or cream it reads as pure joyful release.

As part of the Roots series, this piece carries the deepest cultural specificity - a direct tribute to one of the most distinctive and powerful traditions in Louisiana Creole life.  For collectors with a connection to New Orleans, to jazz, or to the African American and Creole cultural heritage that produced the Second Line, this is an acquisition with personal resonance that goes beyond the visual.

This is a piece for those who know that joy, fully expressed, is its own form of resistance.
